Online Dating Red Flag 3

Beware those contacting you from great distances.

Although not impossible, it is highly unlikely that you are going to find your perfect match living halfway around the planet or even halfway across the country, for that matter.

There are exceptions to this, for example those that share a particular ability, disability, or interests; but generally speaking, I recommend against engaging in long-distance relationships especially those that are solicited from outside your home country.

In the past, I have found myself corresponding with women who said they lived in my city only to discover, after a few emails, that they were currently out of either the state or the country for an extended period of time.  My immediate response to such disclosures was always the same, said response being, “Contact me when you return.”

Many people believe that it is simply easier to meet someone online living further away or that in order to find someone special they have to cast a wider net.  The problem with such a belief is that it does not take into account the exponentially increased likelihood that those caught in your net will attempt to deceive you.

Take it from me, when someone contacts you from a great distance they are most likely either running to something or running from something.  Either way, it’s bad news as far as you’re concerned.
